The internet, and seemingly humanity at large, had a rather visceral reaction to Sonic‘s redesign as shown in the last Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer. His features were a bit too human-like for comfort, to say the least.
It’s been several months since we’ve heard a peep from Paramount about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, but that silence has been broken today with a brand-new trailer featuring the new and totally-not-terrifying Sonic redesign.
After receiving more backlash than probably anticipated, Paramount Pictures rescinded the initial design and promised they’d be back with one more suitable and befitting the character.
Now, we’re in luck. It seems the studio did just that. Looking at the comparison, it seems like a good decision, too.
The Blue Blur has been through numerous redesigns through the decades, from his pudgy classic visage to the leaner post-Sonic Adventure designs. The topic of which designs are best is perpetually up for debate within the Sonic community.
For many, such a reaction from so far outside gaming and movie circles was somewhat baffling, though it was certainly warranted given the initial design. The new redesign more than captures Sonic‘s cartoonish features and, thankfully, doesn’t try to make him more human-like than he needs to be.
Paramount has narrowly dodged the Sonic the Hedgehog movie being the Sonic 06 of movies, thank goodness. The movie is slated for release in February 2020.
