Bungie, the original developer of the Halo series, has always cared about easter eggs in their games and included huge amounts of them in all previous installments of the acclaimed franchise.
The first game from 343i – Halo 4, had an incredibly disappointing lack of easter eggs. But the new studio proved that they listen to the fans, and this time they finally delivered with Halo 5. Some of these easter eggs aren’t just references to peculiar events in the Halo universe, but have a direct impact on your gameplay, such as new weapons, vehicles, collectibles, etc.
This compilation of the best Halo 5 easter eggs includes some amazing finds you definitely need to check out.
Ultra banshee in the Blue Team
Mission 2 of Halo 5 not only introduces you to the Blue Team, Master Chief’s combat sub-unit within the SPARTAN-II Division, but also allows you to obtain a new type of banshee, which deals twice as much damage as the usual one.
Get the regular banshee and fly to the very end of the map. Arrive at the narrow dark pathway and walk along it until you stumble upon a skull-like object. You need to have a rocket launcher equipped and you will see sparkles flying around you – this means that the secret has been activated. Wait for a moment and you will notice a new type of banshee approaching your location. Hijack the banshee and use it to your benefit.
Vending machine in the Glassed mission
Mission 3 sets your foot on the ground right off the space elevator. You need to navigate your way to the right and find a spacey location under the roof. You will need to kill a few prometheans spawning there, but your actual purpose is to find a small room. There is a vending machine inside that has some goodies. Approach it and activate the machine three times to receive a pistol, a shotgun and a saw. All the weapons are already fully loaded.
Soccer match in the Meridian Station
Mission 4 is the first non-combat level in the Halo franchise, and it also contains a vending machine that drops an interesting item. First, you need to get to the hologram of Governor Sloan and go past two buildings located to the left. There you will find the vending machine with soda. Try activating the machine a few times until you see a giant soccer ball spawning to your left. At the back of Meridian Station, you will see a large security door, and across the road there is a barrier. Score two goals at both of these spots and watch fireworks setting off.
Grunt in the main menu
This is the only easter egg in Halo 5 that can be found outside the campaign or multiplayer modes. If you wait for a few minutes in the main menu window, you will see a small creature floating from above in space. After a short observation, you will realize that the funny creature is a Grunt, also referred to as an Unngoy. This is just a really fun little easter egg.
Grunt monologue in the Alliance
At the beginning of the Alliance mission, go to the ledge on the right and approach two grunts sitting there. If you listen closely, you will hear some really funny dialogue between them. It doesn’t give you any special information - except for a few laughs and giggles before you start the real mission. One of them comments on various aspects of the Halo franchise in a humorous fashion, touching on the home planet of the Brutes, the Master Chief's tendency to be unstoppable, and the honor code of the Elites.
Singing grunt in the Reunion
This must be the cutest easter egg in Halo 5 so far. In Mission 7 of the campaign mode, you can find a singing Grunt. From the very beginning of the mission, just head to the right to find a whole slew of narrow passages. As you reach the very end of the way you will see a Grunt holding a skull in his hand and singing to himself. You can talk to him and he will tell you that he heard this song from a human. Also, try punting the little fellow and watch him fall down. He leaves the Reunion Skull right beside you, so don’t forget to pick it up.
Grunt choir in the Battle of Sunaion
Mission 12 has another awesome easter egg involving grunts. They worship something or somebody by singing or praying. You can’t really get inside their temple because of the protective shields, but if you go up to the second floor, you will be able to ground pound them. As of now, there is only one theory of what the singing is about: basically, grunts warn everybody not to awaken the Guardian.
Strange creature in the Coliseum
There is a bizarre-looking creature in the Coliseum map that is available in arena multiplayer mode, which is set in an unknown Forerunner facility. Go to the right section of the map, use your sniper rifle and zoom to a flat rock lying on the floor. Then, take a few steps back and the creature will show itself. It does nothing special, just looks around with its scary blue eyes. The purpose of this easter egg is unknown, but it definitely adds some flavor to the game.
Giant sandworm in The Rig
This is one massive easter egg found in the Halo 5 multiplayer arena map – The Rig. Go to the center of the map and you will see an area below with a giant switch in the middle. You need to ground pound that switch and run to the far side of the map with two pods. Either hit or shoot to destroy both of them. Then, watch the scene happening right behind the pods in the distance. You will see a giant sandworm appearing from the ground and consuming the other rig to a massive explosion.
Prophet hologram in the Truth
When you start the Truth multiplayer arena map, go immediately to the left section. There you will see a pillar with a hologram projection. If you come closer, you may recognize the Prophet of Stewardship preaching in front of an invisible audience.
This easter egg has a special meaning for this particular map, as Truth is the remake of the Midship multiplayer map from Halo 2. The map is set aboard an Undiminished Entelechy, a Covenant ship in the Soell system.
Banshee spawner in the Blue Team
When you start Mission 2, go forward and to the right until you reach a balcony. There you will see a large spaceship below. Now, look to your left and you should notice a black skull in the distance – shoot it. Then, turn back to the ship and shoot the red light in front of you. This will activate the banshee spawner and the whole swarm of banshees will fly out of the ship.
Destiny logo in Halo 5
Both Halo 5 and Destiny have a lot in common. Destiny is developed by Bungie, the previous Halo developer, and Destiny’s classes are called Guardians. However, not many have found this well-hidden reference to Destiny in Halo 5.
It appears that every Spartan in the game wears a Destiny logo unnoticed. You can see the logo when a Spartan is defeated. Zoom in with your sniper rifle and look at the bottom of his shoes – there it is.
