Coming in March 2016 is Miitomo, Nintendo’s first mobile game. Miitomo’s name comes from a combination of “Mii” and “tomo” meaning friend in Japanese. In this social networking game players will use their Mii then be asked a series of questions to be able to connect with their friends and other players.

As a free-to-play game, it will have add-ons available for purchase.

Initial reactions seem disappointed as displayed by general comments around the web and Nintendo’s falling share price yesterday. With few details released, there is speculation about how much of the game has been developed and if there is any actual gameplay, as it currently seems more of a networking app.

Building games that are not on a Nintendo platform is a significant step for the company, and it is an essential step for the company to grow their recently struggling brand by reaching gamers on their smartphones.

Miitomo was originally scheduled for release this year but has been pushed back to allow the necessary time for Nintendo to promote the game.

Nintendo plans to release five mobile games by 2017.
