Ah, Summer: Love Your Games, But Don’t Forget About the Sun

You know, there's a darn good reason summer is often a dead time for the gaming industry: People go outside!
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

The summer drought is once again upon us. One could argue that we don’t see another high-profile, anticipated title until Destiny in September. There’s some good stuff if you’re a sports fan, though.

At any rate, I think it’s a good thing that summer is typically a down time for the industry. This is your chance to re-acquaint yourself with your old buddy, the sun, and the feeling you used to get during summer break in school.

Remember that? Personally, I can’t recall a more blissfully carefree time, filled with swimming pools, corn on the cob, ice cream, and fireflies. There’s just something about summer that brings out the kid in all of us, and you should definitely take advantage.

Don’t worry, your backlog isn’t going anywhere, and you’ve got time to slog through it

That’s what the nights are for. Granted, I’m not a fan of the heat, either, but at least you don’t have to deal with snow and ice. For those of you living in tropical climates where you never see such precipitation, well, good for you. For the rest of us, we occasionally pine for those perfect summer days; not too hot or humid and loaded with healthful, enticing sunlight. You don’t have to do anything in particular. Just get outside.

Yeah, I know. Your backlog has gotten pretty nuts over the past year or so. I’m in the same boat, as I’m still trying to finish games like Grand Theft Auto VAssassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Child of Light, and I haven’t even gotten to Watch Dogs yet. There will be plenty of time for playing after the sun sets, though (even though I often keep working at night).

Above all else, I believe in balance. Balance is a key virtue of life, so if you usually spend a fair portion of your day inside, take it upon yourself to get outside during your leisure time. Now go! I’m keeping this short so you’re not still staring at a video screen in the midst of a beautiful day. 😉
