Are Dailies in MMOs Fun or Chores?

Should people do dailies because they have to or because they want to?
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

I have done a lot of dailies in the many MMO’s I’ve played and it always ends up the same. I ask myself, is this actually fun, or am I just ding this because I “have” to? Often times it may feel like chores, but there are some dailies that are actually fun to do. Where is the line between fun and work? Are dailies even supposed to be fun?

Working Day and Night

For some players, MMO’s are a way to escape the real world of work or homework. Players log in to relax on their favorite video game and play with others. They may not have more than a few hours a day, or even a week, to dedicate to playing. Do they want to spend most of this time doing daily quests? I know I wouldn’t.

Sometimes daily quests are designed to give you rewards so that you can obtain gear for raiding. This basically requires players to do dailies if they want to raid or progress in raiding. Some might say that if people can only play a few hours in a week, then they probably won’t be raiding.

Well, there is still the weekend and I know many people who play for many hours on the weekend, but have no time during the week to play. Does this mean they shouldn’t be able to experience everything they want to in a game simply because they don’t have the time to do it?

I am not saying that people shouldn’t be awarded for the time they put into playing or that casuals should just be handed things, but maybe there can be a balance. There could be various types of dailies or some way to make them not feel just like busy work.

I know this is a matter of opinion, but I’m not the only one with it. I see people constantly complain about the “need” to do dailies and take no joy in them. For me, I usually hate doing them because it’s the same thing over and over again. Pretty much anything will get boring when it’s done exactly the same way everyday.

Work First, Play later

Dailies can still be fun though and many hardcore raiders are not bothered by the need to do dailies. It is just a part of how they prepare for raiding. The fun for some comes when you finally down that boss you’ve been working on and they don’t mind if they have to do “work” before they can have “fun.”

Dailies are also a way to get players coming back to the game. Some people like the fact that they can log in everyday and at least have something to do. After all, without daily quests, you’re kinda stuck after doing all the normal quests.

It comes down to what you enjoy in the game, I believe. Some people may actually enjoy the quests and love to play through them multiple times, while others may lose their drive to play after doing a quest over and over again.

Sometimes getting to experience this, makes doing dailies worth it.

Personally, I may hate doing dailies in most games, but if it is needed to progress in raiding, or even just make it faster, I’ll still do it. I have gotten burnt out on MMO’s though that only have dailies as a source of end-game content besides raiding. I think there should be more things to do so that if I decide not to do dailies, or even after I’m done, I have something to do besides raid.

What do you all think though? Do you feel dailies are just work, or do you actually enjoy doing them? Should they be required to progress in raiding or should they just be something fun to do in your spare time? Let me know in the comments section.
