DLC: an Incomplete Doom

DLC the launch of incomplete games.
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Downloadable Content, or DLC, wasn’t really a popular and mainstream feature until this last generation of consoles and PC. I will be generalizing DLC as a whole not digging into each subgenre of DLC.

DLC at first was not a terrible ordeal, in fact it was kind of a good thing. It typically gave players a bit more play time for a game that they loved. At first the content came at a fair price and had a bit to add to a game. It seemed that players enjoyed this feature…. almost too much.

The only reason I say too much is now companies use this love as an exploit. Companies like Bungie with their ten-year plan for Destiny is just horrible. It almost seems that they have released a game that was incomplete with the idea they could nickel and dime their players. Other games that have become notorious for a DLC package (Season Pass) is the Call of Duty series. You get all the maps, for an extra $30-$50. In reality if you want to experience the full game it seems companies are going to charge you for the DLC price ultimately the player is paying $90-$110 for a standard game, if all DLC is purchased.

Destiny, guilty of milking the cash cow!

With the first installment of many to come Destiny is more than guilty of trying to milk every penny out of players; not for the players for corporate wealth. Bungie has stated that they had a ten-year game plan for Destiny. This plan is going to suck a lot of money from players all the while not really giving them a lot of content for their dollar.

Although DLC isn’t always a bad thing, it seems that companies are relying more and more on it as an income; not just to add content to a game for the players. It also seems sadly that it has made a print and is here to stay.
