E3 Musings: My First E3 Experience

Watching E3 is one of the best choices I have made in a long time!
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

A lot of people seem to have read my article last week titled, Back to the Classics: Why We Are Missing Out With Today’s Games so I promised to do a response to it. I’m sad to say that this isn’t the response…

But I’m happy to say that it isn’t the response because E3 has caused me to seriously reconsider my opinion! So I will be taking the time this weekend to really evaluate what I still agree with in my original post and how to best articulate my original point as well as my change of heart. That being said, this is just a quick article speaking about my first E3 experience!

E3 had fantastic live demos and a great live streaming feed!

As someone who works during the day, I didn’t have the option of sticking on the live feed and listening/watching the live demos going on throughout the day. This made me especially nervous when I found out that we would be covering the events as our internship assignments and that the topics would be competitive. I expected to be left in the dust. Luckily, E3 actually had streaming capabilities with a backlog so I could rewind the live feed and catch up on what I had missed! Plus I could pause and rewind whenever necessary which was incredibly helpful when trying to write an article.

Even better, I found myself captivated by what I was watching. I was rewinding constantly to look at things a second time and I was astounded at the level of investment I saw in these games. I came into this internship with more of a gamer-scorned kind of attitude and E3 changed the way I feel.

Prior to watching E3, I was a bit disenchanted by today’s games.

Honestly, I’m not a hardcore gamer because I lost interest a while back. The popular, well-advertised games weren’t my cup of tea so I just stopped looking and stuck with playing my older games. The E3 Expo revived the gamer in me and has me excited for what’s coming on the market in the foreseeable future. Anyone who has been following my articles knows that I have already started fangirling over Watch Dogs. (I won’t get started in this article or else it will never finish.)

The plethora of history nerds in my life had me appreciating the care and consideration that went into Deadfall Adventures. The people over at The Farm 51 did their research and I could not be more pleased with the level of detail that went into their game!

Of course, Transistor really swept me away with the artistry and Turn ability that enables you to stop gameplay and strategically plan out your attacks.

The hosts for the live shows were all fantastic and just wonderful examples of how gaming and professionalism should mix. They really put the developers at ease and encouraged an open and friendly interaction and live demo experience. While I may not have seen as much as I wanted to, I was more than impressed with everything I watched.

The E3 floor coverage of the Expo was a great way to get a taste of what I would have seen if I had attended.

I have to admit that my favorite part of the Expo coverage I saw (aside from the live stage shows) was the look at the Videogame History Museum. The museum covered a huge range of time and games. I loved catching glimpses of the old arcade style games like Frogger. And seeing some of the first video games was an experience I wish I could have had in person rather than through my small laptop screen.

It was interesting to hear the opinions of gamers at the Expo as well. With the reporter walking around through the crowds of people, I was able to get a glimpse of what it must have been like to be at the Expo, with gamers swarming around you and a different game everywhere you looked.

But enough of my ramblings! What did you think of this year’s E3? How do you think watching E3 can benefit the gaming community? Is it a good way to draw non-gamers into the ranks?
