For Everyone Waiting For Their Spider Walker…

Awesome, original, impractical vehicles continue to advance!

You have probably seen Star Wars.  You have probably therefore seen the fascinating walking war machines that stride across the battlefields of a distant galaxy a long time ago.  As awesome as they look on the silver screen, we can be forgiven for wondering when we would see something similar in reality.  Matt Denton has us covered.

Denton is a software and electronics engineer who was inspired by science fiction not just to dream about the day we would all have these walking metal striders but to actually design and build one.  His machine can navigate different terrain types and can lift and sway the cockpit to provide more exacting vantage points, features that have prompted both a mining company and a marine research organization to express interest in his design.

For those of us waiting for a chance to own one ourselves… we should not hold our breaths.  The hexapod moves at a blistering one mile per hour, and runs out of gas in its four and a half gallon tank within only a few hours.

But damn is it cool.
