Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: 10 Great Lines of Dialogue

10. Zack: This is so messed up. All of it.

Zack hits the nail on the head with this quote, but maybe not in the way he believes. This line comes up early in FF7 Rebirth, but we already know that the journey is going to be messed up. And a big reason for that is the alternate timelines, the ability to influence said timelines for some characters, and the way those timelines are starting to overlap in some ways. It might be a messed up journey, but it’s certainly a fun one as well.

9. Barret: Got enough hangers-on already, but fine.

After saving a nest of baby birds, Yuffie tries to get one to land on her hand when it flies around. However, it picks Barret instead. While Barret tries to shoo it away unsuccessfully, he says this line of dialogue. This shows the kind heart he often tries hiding, but he always looks out for others and takes care of them the best he can in his own way. It’s also touching because this happens during the Corel section, and Barret could use this adorable bird’s support to face his past. Unfortunately, Cloud Jr. reunites with his bird parent before the gang enters Corel fully.

8. Red: Hey, guys! It’s me! I’m back!

Red XIII’s return home shows his true nature and his real voice. He’s so excited to be back, and the guard welcomes him with plenty of pets. Given how much his tail wags, it’s clear that this is the place he considers home. And it makes you wonder how awful his time as Hojo’s test subject really was. But when there’s a scene with a happy animal, I’m sold.

7. Multiple: Two grand.

Barret asks Cloud to take the lead, and he says he’ll do it for two thousand. Aerith references Madam M’s Standard Course message from Remake, which he could buy twice for the amount he requested from Barret. This leads to the gang demanding two grand from each other anytime one helps the other. And it’s a fun reference to all the work that Cloud put in for the sake of disguising himself as a woman in the previous game.

6. Rhonda: Hey, Shinra’s most wanted! Get rid of that thing!

For a group of wanted fugitives, Cloud and the gang have a pretty easy time traveling to Gaia without being captured. There’s a run-in here and there with characters like Hojo wanting Aerith back, but Rhonda makes it clear in Under Junon that Shinra having power doesn’t mean people are loyal to them. In fact, towns like Under Junon have worse lives thanks to Shinra and their projects, so harboring their most wanted fugitives doesn’t even make the residents bat an eye.

5. Marlene: Nobody’s coming back ever again.

It’s kind of hinted at in the first part of the remake trilogy that Marlene knows the future of different timelines. But this line confirms it. However, it doesn’t explain how or why she has this knowledge. Zack and Elmyra think that Marlene is just being dramatic, but Zack soon realizes that Marlene has information he needs about the future, which is important if he wants to unite the timelines.

4. Cloud: Sometimes… I don’t even know who I am.

This line is apt if you know Cloud’s background and situation. He doesn’t know who he is because of the Nibelheim incident, followed by being experimented on by Shinra and then suffering from Mako Poisoning. Cloud really doesn’t know who he is at the moment he says this, especially since he still mistakes Zack’s memories as his own. But it’s interesting to see him vulnerable for a moment as he confides in Tifa.

3. Aerith: After all the pain and horror he put us through… I hate him.

Aerith is usually upbeat and happy, so this line of hers hits a lot harder. It’s no secret to the party that her childhood wasn’t fun and that she had to watch her mom suffer from Hojo’s experiments. It got to the point that his experiments hurt Ifalna more and more because Aerith awakened as an Ancient, meaning he had a backup subject if her mom died. If anybody deserves Aerith’s hate, it’s Hojo.

2. Biggs: We need idiots.

Biggs is pretty much alone when he says this because it happens in the Zack Lives timeline. His sentiment is more meaningful than the words themselves. But his exclamation to Zack that they need more idiots made me laugh despite the weight of the world’s end approaching in that timeline. What he means is they need people who are brave enough to take up tasks that they know are highly dangerous. And really, the line between idiot and very brave can blur depending on somebody’s actions and intentions.

1. Sephiroth: When the boundaries of fate are breached, new worlds are born.

Finally, Sephiroth gives us a monologue about what he wants: reunited worlds. The way he says it sounds like destroying each world results in it being absorbed with the others. And interestingly, Zack is after the same goal since he wants to bring the timelines together. This happens so close to the end of the game that we don’t know exactly what happens next. However, both Sephiroth and Zack mentioning a reunion makes it seem awfully likely that Reunion will be in the title of the last game.
