MUD2MMO : Virtual Science! Applying Real Science to a Virtual World

So how do you do hard science in a world that doesn't exist? Watch and find out!
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Another “classic show”, originally posted December 28, 2011 that I’m posting here in the off-filming week.  This is a part of a larger show series, but stands alone on it’s own pretty well.  I wanted to establish distances in the world of Azeroth.  My argument was (and still is) that World of Warcraft hates hunters, and I needed to show distances to explain my later arguments that a “Sniper” style class would work in the game mechanics.

So, naturally, I applied real science to a virtual world.  Got some interesting results too.  I would encourage others to replicate my experiments to either confirm or deny my results to get a larger body of evidence going.

What amazed me more is I got some pretty hardcore science answers to the last question I asked in the video too.

Just for the sake of clarity, my work here is based on the work of James Wallis and his speech at “Interesting 2008”.  If you want to see his transcript, it’s still on Wallis’ blog which you can find here.

I’d wait to post this Thursday, but I’ll be working pretty solidly starting tomorrow and won’t have a chance to.

I'm a gamer. I'm a reality junkie. I'm a cynic. I'm a dinosaur. I'm a writer. I'm so much more than a paragraph can say. You want more? Ok. I started a video game show on the internet some time ago. See, I've played video games since Intellivision and Atari 2600 and PONG back in the day. Retro-gaming doesn't really fire me up as much as seeing how the community ticks. And after seeing way too many "I'm too young to have played this game when it first came out but it MAKES ME SO ANGRY" reviewers who would happily eviscerate my childhood for lulz... yeah I tossed my hat into the ring. the quickly scooped it back up, I'm told I have a bald spot that needs covering. Outside of gaming... yes I go outside shut up... I like to play paintball when I can. I snowboard a lot, when I can. I go mountain biking, when I can... seeing a trend yet? I prefer reality to video games, but at 4 AM it's hard to find a paintball game going on. Lately I livestream a lot, playing video games for an audience.
