Any good DM (or dungeon master, who is the storyteller of a game) knows how much time goes into creating a captivating story that his or her players will enjoy and remember. They desire to create those campaigns that even a decade later, the group will look back on laugh quite a bit. Many jokes can be retold about a single story arc.
No matter what game, these campaigns can be both challenging and time-consuming, sometimes entailing the creation of a whole new world. The stories that live from these games can be awesome.
Tale about a Rug
One of our favorite running jokes involves a dungeon delving session, playing Dungeons and Dragons, where our group went into an abandoned Dwarven keep. Naturally, an abandoned structure is full of decay and rust, not to mention dust. We came across one room, however, that was pristine clean as if nothing had been touched, not even by time. This set off warning bells to the paladin and the rogue (who was me). Our priest on the other hand was of the most curious sort, so he had to step inside.
With the paladin and rogue shaking their heads, we watched our healer (pray for us) walk into the middle of the room. He didn’t make it out alive as the rug beneath his feet began to twist and turn, wrapping all around our priest and sending him to meet his deity.
How Many TIE Fighters?!
We were playing a game of Star Wars that we had gotten deep into. This one was a pre-built campaign but since we were having such an easy time of it, our storyteller decided to change a few things up.
We were at the final battle of the campaign and it’s time for the big space battle. Since we were a small group, we were expecting a small group. The next words out of our storyteller’s mouth was, “You see fifteen TIE fighters headed straight for you.” We all just stared at him. Needless to say, we all quit cause there was no way we could fight 15 TIE fighters in our outdated equipment. We still tease that storyteller about his newbie faux pas.
