I don’t necessarily hate him, but Tidus is my least favorite protagonist in video games. He falls even lower than Adam Jensen from Deus Ex, who is just bland in my opinion.
I wasn’t a fan of the never-say-die attitude Square Enix forced with Tidus. It made for some really awkward scenes in Final Fantasy X. The forced laugh scene was just bad. If they had made Tidus a bit more realistic, he would have been fine. I just can’t buy into his personality as written.
How I would have done things differently
I would have had Tidus be a bit more open with what he was actually thinking. Instead of covering it up with that win mantra I would have had him communicate more. Don’t get me wrong, that win mantra had its purpose in the game, but it was just over-played.
Blitzball over-referrenced
Unlike other games where a mini game is never mandatory within the actually story, Blitzball has to be played early in the game. It was an innovative approach to introducing the mini game, but they centralized too much around it. Tidus’ character relates everything back to Blitzball and sometime I just want to tell him to shut up.
Do you believe?
He’s not a terrible character. I just think they tried to hard on Tidus. They didn’t develop him over time. Square Enix tried to make him too awesome and lost sight of making him believable. Go home, Tidus, you’re… oh wait.
