Video Games as a School Course?

Video gaming courses are being taught through online education.
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

In an attempt to better myself and my attempts at good employment, I have found the website Coursera. This site offers free courses to the public from various sources including major universities such as Vanderbilt. As I looked through their courses, I found several that were about video games. As a gaming writer, I found these to be most intriguing. How could video games be made into an academic course? I just had to know, so I signed up for a couple.

Online Games: Literature, New Media, and Narrative

This is the first class I will be taking. Online Games: Literature, New Media, and Narrative is set to help people discover just how video games can be based off literature–even old literature, or movies. The course will place its focus upon the works of Tolkien and the video game Lord of the Rings Online (or LOTRO as we gamers know it).

Videogames and Learning

The second class I will be taking is Videogames and Learning. This course will go hand in hand with my writing series on Homeschool and Gaming. The course will talk about how you can learn through the use of video games and the systems they are built upon.

I am watching for other gaming courses to emerge and to take them as well. What sort of gaming course would you like to take?
