Shadow of Mordor is the highly anticipated action-role playing game currently in development by Monolith Productions.  The story is said to take place between the story of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings on the night that Sauron returns to Middle Earth in a corporeal form.  That same night, the orcs slay everyone that has taken camp in Mordor, including Talion who is then brought back by the spirit of vengeance.

The story is something that developers worked extremely hard on to ensure authenticity. Some of the process has been detailed in a behind the scenes interview with actor Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite) and Cinematic Director and Co-Writer Christian Cantamessa (Red Dead Redemption).

The challenge,” Cantamessa said “was to create something new that was built on the foundation of Tolkien and to be respectful of his ideas while incorporating ours. (We wanted to also) be respectful of the fans and the scholars that have studied the material and at the same time allow us to apply the material to video games.”

In addition to a story that is respectful of canon, players can expect a cinematic experience.  Cantamessa sought to move the game forward in a “filmic way” and, according to Baker, “There’s not one scene in the game that is superfluous.  Everything is incredibly purposeful and if it wasn’t, it got cut.”

The incredible tale coupled with the nemesis system that will make each enemy different and remember you, Shadow of Mordor truly is a game to be played and enjoyed.

Shadow of Mordor is set to release October 7, 2014 and will be available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and 4, and Xbox 360 and One.

If you pre-order the game now you can gain access to the Dark Ranger character along with some added perks depending on where you order it from—Deadly Archer Rune if ordered from Amazon, the Flame of Anor Rune if ordered from best buy, the Orc Slayer Rune if ordered from steam, and the Captain of the Watch character skin and the Hidden Blade Rune if ordered from Gamestop
