Rovio has announced its intentions to turn one of its most profitable franchises into a film. Angry Birds, the mobile game, will be adapted into a 3-D film by Sony pictures.
Rovio will be producing the film in house according to their press release and this will represent a big move on the part of the game developer. Angry Birds the animated television series has already gone live worldwide, and this movie (set to launch in July of 2016) will be part of their brand push. The television series has evidently garnered over 150 million views in the first six weeks on Angry Birds apps alone.
Sony heads Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal have said about the deal,
“Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate. There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built in audience to the table. We’re thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship.”
Already attached to the film are producer John Cohen of Despicable Me and executive producer David Maisel, formerly boss at Marvel Studios and executive producer of Iron Man.
