ARK: Survival Evolved reveals Giganotosaurus, its largest dinosaur yet

ARK: Survival Evolved is adding an enormous and dangerous new dinosaur: the Giganotosaurus.
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Studio Wildcard just added a huge new dinosaur to ARK: Survival Evolved – the Giganotosaurus. They’re calling this beast “an enormous and dangerous new predator that towers over even the Tyrannosaurus or the Spinosaurus” that requires “the very best gear and skills” to find, hunt, and tame. Studio Wildcard believes this dino will provide “a new late-game challenge for elite players and large raiding Tribes”. The latest update also adds swords and a set of shields for more advanced melee combat.

The studio’s statement warns that being trapped by a Giganotosaurus “often means certain death,” but that its slow speed makes it slightly less dangerous to encounter in the wild. It also advises that fighting a Giganotosaurus directly isn’t a good idea, as every hit increases the dinosaur’s rage, which in turn increases its energy reserves. However, trying to tame a Giganotosaurus has its benefits as well as its drawbacks:

Taming a Giganotosaurus is a dangerous prospect. Its rage reaction, even when tamed, can sometimes cause it to briefly turn on members of its own tribe. Indeed, it may even throw off its rider if it has been sufficiently angered! And yet, the sheer size and immense power that the Giganotosaurus possesses means that some factions endeavor to tame it as a fear-inducing “capital” beast of war — even at great risk!

ARK: Survival Evolved is currently accessible via Steam’s Early Access program, and will see a full release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in June 2016.
