Activision’s recently released Call of Duty: Ghosts, the newest installment in the Call of Duty franchise, reached over $1 billion in worldwide revenue on its launch day. But wait. That billion dollars is only accounting for units sold to retail. As Activision noted:
“…sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts into retail stores worldwide as of day one,”
So it doesn’t necessarily include the sales to us, the consumers. For a frame of reference, it took CoD: Black Ops II 15 days to reach the same number of sales (but that includes consumer sales).
Activision cited data from Microsoft when it announced that Ghosts had reached the top spot on Xbox Live as the most played game this week. The publisher also revealed that the average gamer’s play session was even longer than those of CoD: Modern Warfare 3 and CoD: Black Ops II, although they sneakily didn’t mention exactly how long those play sessions were.
Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg said that the company expects Ghosts to be the best selling title for the PS4 and Xbox One.
“This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin.”
For comparison, the mega-success Grand Theft Auto: V generated $800 million on launch day, and reached the $1 billion mark in three days, but notably those huge numbers include consumer sales.
