Could We See a Full 3D Kirby?

Kirby: Triple Deluxe team is "really interested in making a fully 3D Kirby game!"
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Dave Cook of VG 24/7 recently interviewed Kirby Triple Deluxe director Shinya Kumazaki, managing director Yurie Hattori, and public relations staff member Satoshi Ishida. Among interesting topics such as Kirby’s origins (turns out he wasn’t inspired by a vacuum cleaner after all) and the team’s approach to designing game mechanics based on hardware, Kumazaki gave interesting insight on creating a new 3D Kirby.

We’re really interested in making a fully 3D Kirby game! I suspect there are also more than a few users who’d appreciate being able to freely run around a sprawling map, fighting with copy abilities.

In one of our previous titles, Kirby Air Ride (seen below), there was a mode called City Trial which saw players racing around a large 3D city area on Air Ride Machines. It definitely showed off how well the combination of the Kirby style action and 3D environment works, so I think it’s certainly a possibility given how much Kirby is capable of!

It’s wonderful to see Kumazaki bring up Kirby Air Ride, a game many consider one of the most underrated games on the Gamecube, as an example of a 3D Kirby game that worked. I’d love to see a Kirby Air Ride 2 announced at E3 for the Wii U, but to integrate those mechanics into a more ambitious fully 3D title would be amazing.

It’s a stretch, sure, but the Kirby team seems excited about the idea and the Wii U is in desperate need for more quality titles. I say give them a shot!

What do you say? Should they make a fully 3D Kirby game? If so, what games do you think it would play like? Let us know in the comments.
