Dragon’s Prophet VIP Packs on Sale, Give Items and Guaranteed Beta Access

Dragon's Prophet has VIP packages. Are they worth it?
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Runewalker’s Dragon’s Prophet entered closed beta in North America just two days ago, and Sony Online Entertainment has already put VIP Dragon Packs up for those eager to play the game. Those of us (sad face) who did not get a beta key can get in via one of these packs — though the additional items that come with them could be useful to those who got in already as well.

There are three Dragon Pack tiers, ranging from $19.99 to $89.99. The packs can be seen here, but there is one thing to note: Items in each pack cannot be redeemed until Dragon’s Prophet enters open beta. It appears VIP members will receive an email in April with the details on open beta launch.

Are VIP/Founder Packs Worth It?

It’s hard to say whether or not this recent trend of MMORPG publishers seeking money via founder’s packs on beta titles is good or not.

On one hand, it’s all too easy for consumers to spend money simply to get into these games to find out that they’re not great and quit. The lack of fleshed-out, non-biased opinions on these titles makes it hard to determine whether or not these types of deals are really worth the dosh.

In the other hand lies a wealth of developers struggling due to development costs. The additional funding from these packs can help a studio continue pushing the game further while under development, but there’s no guarantee the publisher’s aren’t just money-grubbing. I’m looking at you, Scarlet Blade.

Dragon’s Prophet is in closed beta in its native country of Taiwan as well, and the title’s development is nowhere near finished. Do I condone buying VIP/founder’s packs? Not particularly. Do I think Runewalker needs additional funds for development costs? Probably. It’s up to you as a consumer to make the call as to whether it’s worth it or not.
