Despite all these high-definition upgrades and overhauls we’ve seen in the previous generation, we never got the most requested one: A high-def version of the iconic Final Fantasy VII.
In the past, Square Enix bosses have said the project is simply too large. Recently, in a new Eurogamer interview, FFVII director Yoshinori Kitase gave us a similar explanation. However, he also left us with a glimmer of hope:
“I can honestly tell you I would love to do that. If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There’s no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen.”
“Staff availability and budget” are big issues and furthermore, Kitase says he’s just not motivated enough to take on this massive project. In fact, all three elements – manpower, budget and motivation – must be in place, and he doesn’t know if “those three things will happen simultaneously.” That all being said, he refuses to rule out FFVIII HD as a possibility for the future.
“I won’t rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen.”
Kitase said such a project would essentially be his “life work,” so you know he’d put his heart and soul into it. Fans have been begging for this remake for years now.
At the very least, we’ll get the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remasters next month.
