A 2D action side-scroller, To The Death melds together elements of classic beat ’em up games and arcade shooters. The game follows two warriors with a vendetta so deep, it continues after death in a purgatory-esque world called The Crawl. Players alternate between controlling each warrior as they fight their way through various levels of the afterlife.

The game is being developed by Scary Mostro — a new company started by industry veterans Todd Alderman and Francesco Gigliotti. With experience working on games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Titanfall, the duo has partnered up with Section Studios. Creative Director Cecil Kim will also join the team, a veteran with 15 years experience and four God of War games under his belt.

In order to help fund the game, Scary Mostro and Section Studios have launched a Kickstarter. The team is asking for $400k so that they are able to further develop the game “without compromise”. The project also has a number of stretch goals including an infinite mode, leaderboards, PS4 and Vita releases, story and combat expansion, and online multiplayer.

While To The Death is still classified as a prototype, the studios note that the game is fully functional and currently runs at 60 fps. An early release is anticipated for May 2015.
