There have been many dozens of different ways people have supported charities in the past.  Most of us donate a few bucks here and there, some hold marathons, or bake sales, or whatever event will get local attention.  Gabe Newell has offered to talk.  The founder of Valve has announced that he will answer questions on Reddit, but only if the donations to the Heart of Racing charity manage to get all the way up to $500,000.

The charity in question was founded in 1997 by Don and Donna Kitch.  The money donated will be going, in its entirety, to the Seattle Children’s Hospital.  The hospital specializes in providing healthcare for children with medical needs too complicated for most hospitals without being prohibitively expensive.

The race in question is the 24 Hours at Daytona, a literal 24-hour race at Daytona International Speedway.  Donations are on a per-lap basis, with the charity race lasting upwards of 700 laps.

Gabe Newell’s reason for supporting the Heart of Racing charity?

“Well, it’s for the kids.”
