It was not too long ago the Boy Scouts of America announced they were putting together a game design merit badge. It looks like the Girl Scouts do not want to be left behind.
Joining forces with Women in Games International
Girl Scouts is teaming up with Women in Games International to put together a patch for video game design. What we know so far is that hopeful scouts can use Gamestar Mechanic to earn the brand new patch. While the obvious benefit is to give Girl Scouts a new possible experience over their scouting career, which is much of the point of the scouting programs to begin with, it also has other potential benefits.
Helping to close the game design gender gap
The video gaming industry is starting to get a lot of attention for how male-dominated it is on the development side. Having growing girls learning the fundamentals of video game design can only help narrow that gender gap by giving more young women an introduction in a comfortable environment.
Keep your eyes open for this new patch. The girls wearing it may very well be making the games you cannot wait for in a few years.
