Jun is quoted as saying, “In [Gungrave VR], we are depicting a story that acts as a prequel to the PlayStation 4 game Gungrave G.O.R.E., which is currently in development.”

Business director Kay Kim then further elaborated on the topic:

The curtain will open on the rebirth of Gungrave starting with Gungrave VR, and continue towards G.O.R.E. The overall scale is difficult to convey at this point. But for G.O.R.E., we want to deliver on a greater scale and level of quality than Gungrave VR, so we are developing on the latest Unreal Engine. We are aiming for a scale that compares favorably to higher level games, but I think that the most important thing is, ‘How can we create a title that receives the consent and sympathy of existing fans?’ I want to make more and more effort, and pursue the understanding and expression of the Gungrave setting.

Gungrave VR releases in Japan today on the PlayStation Store and will release in the West sometime in 2018. The first Gungrave video game, developed by Red Entertainment, was released in 2002 for the PlayStation 2 in Japan, North America, and Europe. An anime series of the same name based on the game was released in Japan in 2003 and later received an English dub in North America, which aired periodically on G4’s Anime Unleashed block.

The sequel to the first game, titled Gungrave: Overdose, was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004 in Japan, North America, and Europe. Although the games both received mixed reception, they are well known for their art and visual style with character designs by Yasuhiro Nightow (Trigun) and mechanical designs by Kōsuke Fujishima (Oh My Goddess!Sakura Wars).
