Lately the Oculus Rift virtual reality technology has been getting a whole lot of attention as more and more games are modded for use on to it. Newest arrival? Driving sim Euro Truck Simulator 2.
Enter the Rift
The Oculus Rift system is a headset and projects the appropriate view independently to each eye to emulate real sight. Camera movement is done by physically moving your head. Unfortunately, that makes it a little difficult for us to actually know how it feels to use. We simply can’t know for sure until we get a hands-on (heads-on?) demo. All we get to see is these strange dual screenshots, which don’t exactly make sense without the seeing them through the Rift. There have been virtual reality gimmicks in the past, but with all the recent hype this seems like the real deal.
As of right now, for Euro Truck Simulator 2, the Oculus Rift lets players look around the cabin of the car or truck and experience driving from a much more realistic setting.
“Looking around the cabin freely is incredible, it almost feels like being in there,” developers posted on the SCS Software blog. The mod is still in development, but it looks promising.
What could be better for a driving simulator or racing game than actually feeling like you’re in the driver’s seat? I cannot wait to get my hands on the Rift and take a peek into virtual reality racing games. Imagine sitting in your living room and feeling like you’re actually behind the wheel a Lamborghini going 200 miles and hour. Hell, imagine performing the crazy take downs from the Burnout series with this thing on. Driving in on-coming traffic for those extra points would be all more terrifying in virtual reality 3D.
We’ve already heard news about the Oculus Rift tech and some of the games being modded for the technology look amazing. Skyrim and Mirror’s Edge mods are already in development and look like a ton of fun! Rumor has it there might even be a Fall Out 3 mod for the Rift.
