Two competing consoles launch at the same time. The result? A whole lot of petty hatred flying around the Internet.
Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb says we should put aside the adolescent online hate and indulge in one universal fact: the gaming industry is on the rebound and above all else, we’ve got more choice than ever before.
Speaking on Reddit, Hryb said that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are off to great starts, and both will sell “a ton.” Hence, why argue about sales numbers and perceived hardware superiority?
“Both new platforms are off to a great start. We all should be celebrating a healthy, vibrant industry. Sony has done a good job and they should be commended. The hate that infects gaming in the online space needs to go away. Sony will sell a ton. We will sell a ton. The industry is doing well…and consumers have choice.”
Major Nelson isn’t the only Microsoft representative to praise Sony. Earlier this month, Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer said that Sony did a “nice job” with the PS4, and he was impressed with their “stick-to-it-iveness.”
As for the sales numbers, Sony has sold 4.2 million PS4 units worldwide, while Microsoft sold 3 million Xbox Ones. In the US, the PS4 appears to have sold more in the November/December period, but Microsoft’s console was tops in December.
It needs to be said more often
What Hryb said needs constant repetition. The online negativity is just out of control; the only headlines that make any headway are, at the very least, controversial. They’re often downright inflammatory. Last I checked, this hobby was about fun. One thing I’ve noticed? Back in the day, there were still platform wars. However, it seemed like everyone would support their argument by supporting the games and brands they loved. Now, people try to win arguments by bashing the competition.
Sure, the arguments have always been around. It’s just that now, they seem to focus on negativity. And really, what’s the point?
