A new report found on Eurogamer has revealed the specs for the PS4K, aka the PS4.5. According to Eurogamer’s sources, the upgraded PlayStation 4 — which was first revealed back in March — is internally codenamed PlayStation NEO. The NEO will have an improved GPU, higher clock speeds, improved memory bandwidth, and will support 4K image output.
The publication goes on to state that starting in October, games released on the PlayStation 4 must have a ‘base mode’ for the current model, along with a ‘NEO mode’ compatible with the upgraded system. Any games released prior to October will be able to take advantage of the new hardware, thanks to an upcoming patch. In layman’s terms, games running in ‘NEO mode’ will have improved frame rate and higher visual fidelity.
The exact specs found on Eurogamer are below:
Based on this report, it seems like Sony has no intention of splitting its user base with the upcoming system upgrade — which is very good news. There will be no NEO exclusive games, nor will NEO owners have any exclusive unlockables or gameplay advantages — besides a visually superior experience.
Will you be picking up the PlayStation ‘NEO’ when it finally comes out, and do you think this upgrade is even necessary? Let us know in the comments below!
