Speed runners are brilliant players who are able to beat games in times that just doesn’t seem possible. The record runs that are set usually take a tremendous amount of time and effort to perfect.

Well, yesterday one of these speed run records were broken on the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES. The speed runner known as Darbian set a new record for beating Super Mario Bros. on any percentage. He was able to complete the game in 4 minutes and 57.627 seconds. The previous record, held by the speed runner Blubbler finished the game in 4 minutes and 57.69 seconds.

To perform this feat Darbian had to exploit certain glitches in the game, like the warp pipe in level 4-2 which sends Mario to the last world, and another with the Bullet Bills in level 8-2 which speeds up the frames of animation.

After his speed-run, Darbian went to the speed-run sub-Reddit where he answered questions on how he finished the game in such a fast time and gave a run down of where he was able to cut time.

During his live twitch stream of the speed-run, Darbian was attached to a heart monitor to show how stressful certain parts of the speed-run was. When Darbian finished the final Bowser fight his heart rate was at 154 beats per minute.

This is an amazing achievement for Darbian and we would all like to give him a congratulations on setting the new world record for Super Mario Bros.
