Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl originally launched in Japan with full NFC support for amiibo and other collectibles. However, the Switch version releasing in the West is cutting that support and replacing it with something else.
Originally, the game let players scan collectible keychain items called Jara that depicted specific weapons or items. Doing so would result in a daily round of in-game items used for crafting purposes.
Despite the Switch supporting NFC communication, the Gold version has you visit the Sam Witch once per day to get your bread-pun fortune told. However, the end result is still the same: receiving a set of craftable items.
Sam Witch: Listen up, kiddies! The Western version of #SnackWorld does not support real-world jara and snack toys. Instead, all content that was only available via scanning the NFC toys, is available by having me tell your daily fortune in my canopé. You got that? Kya hah hah… pic.twitter.com/bk1TjsuBWW

It’s not too difficult to see why the change is taking place. Snack World was fairly popular in Japan when it released on the 3DS and Switch, following on from the Snack World anime’s success. Rather like Yo-Kai Watch, Level-5’s other multimedia franchise, it doesn’t have the same following in the West, and it’s doubtful Jara would be worthwhile.
Frankly, that’s fine; not spending extra money amassing an army of collectibles is perfectly okay with us.
Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl Gold launches for Nintendo Switch on February 14, and be sure to check out the recent gameplay trailer. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more on Snack World as it develops.
