The Lego and Nintendo collaboration hopes to foster imagination and create a brand-new experience.

A few days ago, The Lego Group and Nintendo teased a new collaboration focused on Super Mario Bros. Today, we got a look at what it’s all about: an interactive Lego-Mario experience using real Legos to play a Mario-style game.

The idea is to move Mario about along a course of your own making, with obstacles like Lego Goomas and Lego Bowser Jr. in the way. Mario collects digital coins in the process, with a coin count and the traditional timer displaying on his LED chest.

The accompanying press release reads:

The new line will let kids experience the playful world of Super Mario like never before. Super Mario will be brought to life in the physical Lego world and new levels of challenge and styles of play will be part of the iconic Lego experience enjoyed by generations.

It doesn’t say anything about the Lego sets, launch dates, or how much they’ll cost, so we’ll probably be getting more information soon.

Takashi Tezuka, Nintendo’s Executive Officer and Game Producer, said he appreciates how Lego encourages imagination:

I have always liked Lego products and how they help children use their imagination to play.

The new product we created together with the Lego Group seeks to combine two different styles of play – one where you freely build the world of Mario and the other where you play with Mario in the very world that you have created.

One thing the trailer shows that the press release doesn’t mention is something savvy parents probably know automatically: batteries aren’t included.

The full release can be found on The Lego Group’s website. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Super Mario Lego news as it jumps our way.
