Oculus: “Woah, Everyone Hates Our Facebook Deal? …Really?”

The Oculus bosses seem surprised at the negative reaction to Facebook's acquisition.

When we found out that Facebook had purchased Oculus VR for $2 billion, not everyone was enthusiastic.

In fact, the negative backlash was kinda epic.

That’s what surprised Oculus VR president Nate Mitchell, who told Game Informer that while he expected some heat from their core fans, he didn’t think everyone else would be so hostile concerning the sale:

“We assumed that the reaction would be negative, especially from our core community. Beyond our core community, we expected it would be positive. I don’t think we expected it to be so negative.”

However, Mitchell said he’s seeing the discussions on Twitter and Reddit “swinging back in the opposite direction,” possibly due to a drive to educate people on the deal. Mitchell emphasized that it’s up to Oculus to explain why the sale made sense, and why it should be considered a good thing.

That’s what Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey set out to do, by answering a lot of fan questions at Reddit. He addressed privacy concerns and what the future looks like for Oculus after Facebook’s acquisition.

Hate it or love it?

Me, I don’t really care about virtual reality or Facebook, so it barely registers. I do know I despise Facebook but hey, if they’ve got the money to make such a purchase, so be it. We gave ’em that money, after all. But do you think this deal was a bad move? If so, why?
