Planetside 2, the popular MMOFPS from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has been confirmed to release on the Playstation 4 this holiday season. According to IGN, the current PC exclusive will be given the console treatment alongside DC Universe Online.
When Sony announced last February that the PS4 would not feature backwards compatibility, many were left to wonder what kind of plans Sony had in order to bring a successful launch to its newest console. Today marks the beginning of its plans to meld PC and Playstation gamers together.
If it is anything like its PC counterpart, Planetside 2 for the PS4 will feature dedicated servers, player progressions, and a rather extensive online store, so players can unlock new weapons, attachments, or skins to customize their characters. However, the game will be free-to-play, which means that gamers will not have to buy anything. Instead, they will be able to use the in-game currency known as certification points, which they will earn by simply playing the game. These “cert points” can then be used the same way as those who spend real money.
One of the most important aspects of Planetside 2 are the massive battles that take place. For the PC, each server holds 6,000 players, with 2,000 players maximum on each of three continents (called zones in other MMOs) at any given time. This creates large-scale battles with thousands of players that you really can’t get in any other first person shooter. With the PS4, we will have to wait and see if this important feature will be implemented or scaled back, like Battlefield 3 was for its console release.
If you can’t wait for the PS4 release, you can download Planetside 2 free for the PC right now. Just head over here and download the client and I will see you on Auraxis!
(UPDATE: John Smedley posted this on his twitter account: “It’s unlikely on Planetside 2 that PS4 and PC players will play on the same servers.”)
