Playstation TV, Xfinity, and cable on the Xbox.

Sony reapplies for Playstation TV trademark under a service, but does it really stack up?
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Last week during the GameSkinny Roundtable podcast recording I brought up a topic about the future of cable in the Next Gen era. Due to getting a bit overpowered vocally by some of the more opinionated members I never got to the actual point of the topic, which was I felt cable and visual media was going to find their places among the new consoles.

After lapsing on their trademark of Playstation TV, last September, Sony submitted a new trademark application last month for Playstation TV. The current trademark request is for a service instead of a product. It kind of coincided with my theory so I was intrigued, however, after doing a bit of digging around I was a bit disappointed. The E3 announcement of a possible collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment makes the possibilities a bit lack luster compared to the deals Microsoft has received. If it’s just a way to market Sony Pictures media on the Playstation then I don’t see myself wanting Playstation TV.

So far Microsoft has a deal with Time Warner Cable to stream cable on the Xbox, given that you have an Xbox Live Gold account and service with Time Warner Cable. Xbox also has Xfinity with Comcast, allowing Comcast customers access to “thousands of movies and TV shows.”

So not to kick a dead Minecraft horse or anything, while Playstation 4 won the E3 battle, it looks like Microsoft is winning the digital media availability war.
