While Telltale Games is not ready to announce anything formally, there are multiple sources within the games industry that claim they are working on a licensed Game of Thrones title. Back in October, Dan Connor and Kevin Bruner said that they were working on a few licenses that fall into their “Dream IP” scenario.
Game of Thrones seems to be tailor made for the Telltale formula of high drama episodic games that usually end on cliffhangers. As Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, this would also play into the Telltale style of telling stories from the source material without directly retelling what we’ve already seen/read. Recent titles like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us have been more of a cel-shaded comic book style… but they’ve also produced games like Jurassic Park with much more traditional looking graphics.
Game of Thrones was introduced to consoles via a poor 2011 RTS, and a 2012 RPG developed by Cyanide Studios; that game has a MetaCritic score of 52, with only a single positive review. Given the (well deserved) popularity of the TV show, it seems like a natural fit to have Telltale make an equally as good game.
I wouldn’t expect any official kind of announcement from Telltale this year. I was listening to a podcast with the two head writers from The Walking Dead game (who are no longer at Telltale) about how work on that title actually had started before The Walking Dead TV series.
So as this might be one of Telltale’s dream IP’s… and definitely a dream for fans… it might take some time before dreams become reality.
