Since The Last of Us Part 2 was officially announced at PSX 2016, fans have been clamoring for the followup to Naughty Dog’s acclaimed action-adventure game. While the company has provided no official word on its launch, a former IGN Editor, Alanah Pearce, has recently claimed that players will get their wish when the title is released this year.
Last week, Pearce took to Twitter to express her surprise that The Last of Us Part 2 was not included in a list outlining the most anticipated games of 2019. This prompted users to point out that the game had not been confirmed for release this year, to which Pearce responded that “TLOU2 100% has.”
Following a three-year stint as editor at IGN, it may be plausible that Pearce has details on The Last of Us Part 2 that have not yet been made available to the public. She further substantiates her claim with some additional information regarding the potential release date:
So I have been told multiple times by multiple people. Not like things can’t change or it’s set in stone if it hasn’t been publicly announced though.
While Pearce’s suggestion should certainly be approached with skepticism, this is not the first indication that The Last of Us Part 2 is coming in 2019. Last December, for example, the game was listed on Amazon Italy with a 2019 release date, and a recent video from Sony titled “Coming Attractions” includes gameplay footage.
Both of Pearce’s Tweets have since been deleted, but they certainly suggested confidence about the game’s release window. The reason for their removal can only be speculated upon, but fans should indeed take these statements with a grain of salt until an official release date has been confirmed.
While some expected a trailer for The Last of Us Part 2 to make an appearance at The Game Awards 2018, it was notably absent. Naughty Dog did use this opportunity to indicate that it was “hard at work” on the game but confirmed details about The Last of Us Part 2 have been sparse since its announcement.
This silence may indicate that the title is further away than Pearce is suggesting, or perhaps Naughty Dog has a surprise in store for fans over the upcoming months. Whatever the case may be, The Last of Us Part 2 is certain to remain a highly desired game until it is released.
