Today, Sony launched an interesting followup to their Greatness Awaits trailer: their new Bid for Greatness service. The service, which at this point I believe is only a temporary campaign, allows PSN subscribers to use their gold trophies as a sort of currency to bid on Playstation merch. The trophies stay on your account, so it’s not like you lose that gold you worked hard for, but you can actually use it for something now.
Currently, only one item is up, a full sized costume of the Black Hand outfit from Killzone: Shadow Fall. One item will continue to go up each day through the end of July. There are several interesting ones up for grabs, including a replica dagger from Skyrim, a Delsin costume from Infamous: Second Son, Captain Kenway’s outfit from Assassin’s Creed 4, and a Clicker Mask from The Last of Us. The current Black Hand outfit is going for 530 trophies, which is pretty steep, so if you want to grab some of the loot you may want to start trophy hunting pretty hard.
It’s not a totally new idea, Xbox 360 has it’s rewards program where once you reach a certain gamerscore you get a small amount of Microsoft points during your birthday month, and when you get really high, a teeny discount on all of yur Marketplace purchases, but these are so small that most gamers consider them negligible. Playstation’s limited campaign actually gives some real feeling of value to the stuff they’re giving away, but it’s much harder to get because you’re competing for it.
So what do you guys think? Is this the kind of thing you’d like to see more of? Stay tuned to me here on Gameskinny for more info about whether this is a limited campaign or whether they plan to continue it past July.
