It seems that Square Enix has decided to go old-school for its latest recap video for Final Fantasy XIII, preparing fans for the upcoming release of the third installment of the game, Lightning Returns.  Square released the recap video today on its YouTube page with this description:

Recommended Videos

“The scope of FINAL FANTASY XIII’s mythology is so massive it could only be fully told across three games, and the saga will finally reach its conclusion on February 11, 2014. Join us as we look back on the stories of FINAL FANTASY XIII and FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 that shaped Lightning into the heroine she is today, as she and a band of unlikely heroes came together to save the world.”

As if a video recap of the first two installments wasn’t enough, Square decided to make a 16-bit video, transporting fans of the series back to the days of the SNES and Final Fantasy VI. There is something so incredibly nostalgic about the look and music associated with classic 16-bit games, and Square does an excellent job of tapping into that nostalgia with this video. As gaming video creators do new and interesting things on YouTube, it’s nice to see Square step outside the box a bit and give fans something fun and different.
