No matter your opinion on Steam, there is no question of whether or not the service is growing. Just last year, Valve reported that they had reached 5 million concurrent users for the first time in Steam’s history. Last weekend, the service finally reached the 6 million concurrent user mark for the first (and hopefully not last) time.
If you use Steam, you can probably guess what had so many people on at one time.
Can you guess?
I bet you can.
Come on.
That’s right, a sale!
As usual, Steam users prove themselves to be thrifty; last weekend’s record-setting activity levels were smack in the middle of the Autumn Sale. No matter how you look at it, that is a lot of people playing and buying games on one service.
It will be interesting to see how many concurrent users there are during various periods of their Winter Sale later this year. Given the level of activity through digital distribution, how can people say PC gaming is dead with a straight face?
