The New Hearthstone Expansion Could Be Called Eye of Azshara

A recently registered trademark could be a hint for the next expansion of Blizzard's Hearthstone.

Blizzard may name their next Hearthstone expansion Eye of Azshara. CosmicGuitars, a member of the MMO Champion forum, recently noticed that Blizzard has registered this name as a new trademark. It was registered at the Benelux trademark office on October 27.

The filling itself only tells us that the name will be used for ‘computer game software’ and ‘entertainment services’. However, given that Azshara is a region in World of Warcraft, it is likely that this name is connected to the Warcraft universe. As well as the WoW region, Azshara could also refer to Queen Azshara, Empress of the Nazjatar and former ruler over the elven people of Kalimdor.

What is Blizzard up to?

There has been some speculation that this could be the name of a new World of Warcraft expansion. Yet given that Warlords of Draenor has not yet been released, it seems far too early for Blizzard to be announcing its successor.

Instead, it is far more likely that Eye of Ashara will be the name for the next Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft expansion. Director Eric Dodds revealed a new expansion at PAX Prime in September. He said that there would be over 100 new cards and a new type of pack in the expansion. Hearthstone‘s first expansion, Curse of Naxxramas, was released this year on July 22.

Aside from Eye of Azshara, Blizzard has also been registering trademarks for something called Overwatch. Expect much more details about both of these trademarks to be revealed at Blizzard’s fan convention, Blizzcon, which starts on November 7.
