The Sandy Hook Arcade Center is running strong. The not-for-profit community family-friendly arcade has regular visitors and seems to have achieved its initial goal of giving people a place to enjoy video games without simultaneously facing the violence so often inherent in the media. As much as Newtown needed that, it’s refreshing to see it actually delivered on and supported.
Now the community arcade is hosting its first event! Stern Pinball Inc. is partnering with the Newtown arcade to host a tournament. It will happen March 16, that’s this coming Saturday for the calendar-impaired, and will see the players split into three age-brackets to encourage competitors of all ages to participate. The games to be played are Stern pinball’s brand new Avengers-themed machine and Winter X-Games Snocross.
While I happen to always enjoy seeing an e-sport of any sort, this event particularly pleases me. The family-friendly nature of the games chosen and of having age brackets for participants both fit in perfectly with the overall theme of the Sandy Hook Arcade Center, and can help Newtown and the rest of the country get its video game fix, even competitively, without starting a discussion about violence.
I approve of focusing on the fun.
