The War Z has been dogged by pretty heavy allegations from the start: false descriptions, stealing content, dismissing and silencing dissatisfied players…
For all of these indiscretions, creator Sergey Titov has offered an obligatory “my bad, ya’ll” to fans of the game and to PC gamers at large.
In an open letter posted on the game’s official forum, the executive producer admits that he and his colleagues failed to “effectively communicate” plans for future development to those who bought the game. Titov previously labeled Steam critics “haters,” and deleted negative comments about the half-baked release.
I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others. This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner […] I was too focused on how great we are and how a small independent team got their first game to over 700,000 users in a two-month period.
Well, then. Someone’s still quite pumped up despite it all, no?
Titov says that community mods were not as proactive as they should have been in engaging the community and providing productive conversation, rather than merely regulating users.
He adds, however, that this will be remedied and that the community will have a more active role in shaping the future of The War Z. He proposed inviting ten players will be invited to Los Angeles to provide their input directly to the team.
As a step toward more open communication with those who line his pockets, Titov confirms that this release of the game is a Foundation Release and that Hammerpoint and OP Production intend to build upon it.
