The free-to-play, co-op, third-person shooter developed by Digital Extremes will be featured as a launch title for Sony’s next gen console. The game will feature a business model akin to the F2P implemented in the PC version and will benefit from the special functionality of the Dualshock 4 controller.
According to Warframe Creative director Steve Sinclair, Digital Extremes will retain rights to the game which will allow them to maintain business relations with Sony without compromising their creative vision.
“Sony has been incredibly supportive and available [for indie developers], and [PlayStation 4], in my opinion, is incredible to develop for…”
As of now there seems to be an exclusivity agreement on the table; when asked about whether or not Warframe will be a PS4 exclusive, Sinclair answered “so far, it’s looking that way, yes.”
Regarding the free-to-play/microtransactions business model, Sinclair revealed that the PS4 version of the game will receive an IOS and Android application and new content monthly.
“We showed Warframe for the first time to our entire studio, and everyone had their jaws on the floor, how 1080p, silky smooth and beautiful it was. So, I’m really, really enjoying working on the machine.”
Warframe is available on Steam for free with additional DLC content available for $39.99 and $99.99.
How do you feel about the free-to-play model making its way into the console market? Let me know in the comments.
