Wasteland 3, the follow-up to the crowd-funded resurrection of the classic ’80s cRPG franchise released in 2014, is now officially due to hit consoles and PC in Spring of 2020. It will be published by Deep Silver.
Developed by InXile, Wasteland 3 will launch on PS4, Xbox One (including Xbox Game Pass), Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.
While the second game took place in dry, dusty sections of post-apocalyptic Arizona and California, this time around, the Rangers are headed to snowy Colorado for a variety of frozen badlands locales.
InXile Entertainment Studio Head Brian Fargo commented on the upcoming release:
Wasteland 3 is a passion project for inXile and especially me. I directed the first Wasteland in 1988 and its sequel was one of the original great crowdfunding successes, and it’s a series we care deeply about. Thanks to our partnership with Deep Silver and Microsoft, we’re able to deliver the kind of deep, immersive experience that Wasteland fans want and expect.
A new E3 trailer covering some of the changes in environment and combat (featuring the return of the lovable drunk Scotchmo) can be seen below.
Needless to say, the Rangers are expected to receive an “icy” reception from the local bandit gangs, and it seems like there will be more of the series trademark dark humor on display.
The upcoming third Wasteland title is just the latest in a string of old franchises InXile has brought back from the dead in recent years, with the release of Torment: Tides Of Numenera in 2017 as well as last year’s The Bards Tale IV: Barrows Deep.
While heavily focusing on players and crowdfunding old fan favorites in recent years, InXile just saw a major shift in operations and was acquired by Microsoft in November of 2018, alongside fellow cRPG developer Obsidian Entertainment.
