With Steam accounts preloading and Collectors Editions shipped, eager space jockeys will be getting sweaty-palmed in anticipation of the opportunity to “trade, fight, build, think,” as the revival of the dead PC space sim genre continues.

“X Rebirth represents a spectacular new beginning for the X series, offering loyal fans and newcomers alike a vast, vivid and extremely detailed universe to explore throughout the game.” – Egosoft, X Rebirth website

The video shows a montage of in-game footage largely involving lots a neon-tastic lasers, spaceships and explosions and suggests that X Rebirth‘s gameworld will be hectic and dangerous.

Given the attention to detail that Egosoft have been directing out attention to in the past, it will be interesting to see how they strike the balance between a complex and involved world and intuitive and accessible gameplay.

Tomorrow we’ll find out.

X Rebirth is available on Steam, Deliver2Mac and Gamersgate from Friday 15th November.

Broken paramedic and coffee-drinking Englishman whose favourite dumb animal is an oxymoron. After over a decade of humping and dumping the fat and the dead, my lower spine did things normally reserved for Rubik's cubes, bringing my career as a medical clinician to an unexpectedly early end. Fortunately, my real passion is in writing and given that I'm now highly qualified in the art of sitting down, I have the time to pursue it. Having blogged about video games (well, mostly EVE Online) for years, I hope to channel my enjoyment of wordcraft and my hobby of gaming into one handy new career that doesn't involve other people's vomit.
