Legendary video game developers John Romero and Adrian Carmack once again reunite to create a new FPS game called BLACKROOM. The official Kickstarter campaign started as of today, with the developers looking for a total of $700,000 in funding. The game will be developed using their in-house studio, Night Work Games.
Who are John Romero and Adrian Carmack?
John Romero and Adrian Carmack are two of the four co-founders of Id Software — the other two being Tom Hall and John Carmack, who are no longer a part of Id Software. Both developers were a part of the creation of classic video games such as Commander Keen series, DOOM, DOOM 2 and Quake.
John Romero is renowned for his excellent level design and programming. He was one of the main level designers for the classic games mentioned above. Adrian Carmack is an artist, and was responsible for the design of the textures, character models and enemies of Id Software’s games, right up to Doom 3.
Both of them know everything there is to know about creating an FPS game. Seeing the two of the once again reunite is certainly exciting. If anyone can make a great FPS game, it is these two legends of the video game industry.
What is Blackroom?
BLACKROOM is a visceral, varied, and violent shooter that brings back classic FPS gameplay. It will be a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense weaponized combat. It will be a fast game that will allow the player to circle-strafe enemies, use skillful movement to dodge attacks, and rocket jump.
The game is set in the future, where a company called HOXAR has created a technology that allows people to be anywhere at any time. They are capable of creating fully-realized holographic worlds that are indistinguishable from reality. And it all takes place from inside a giant black room.
Players assume the role of Dr. Santiago Senora, Chief Node Engineer at HOXAR. While testing the new technology, he uncovers troubling anomalies that blend the real world and the virtual. The player is sent in and swept across a staggering and dangerous array of simulations. The question is…will you destroy what BLACKROOM has made real or will you lose your ability to know the difference between real and hologram?
Getting off to a great start
BLACKROOM is already off to a great start with its Kickstarter Campaign. As of writing this, it has already received over $100,000 of its $700,000 goal in under twenty-four hours. I have to admit, I am excited by the news and can’t wait to see more of what BLACKROOM is going to offer players.
It seems the developers are heading in the right direction, taking the same approach to BLACKROOM as they did to DOOM all those years ago. They aim to involve the community in every possible way that they can. This community involvement includes making the game fully mod supportive.
