Majority of Witcher 3 team has moved on to Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt RED have been hard at work on their next flagship title for a while now.

Back in 2012, CD Projekt RED revealed a beautiful cinematic trailer for their next action RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. There wasn’t much in terms of details, but it was more than enough to stoke the fires of hype among the company’s fan base.

What was apparent was that Cyberpunk 2077 was going to be much different than The Witcher series. In place of swords, shields and horses, Cyberpunk 2077 features a futuristic world rife with cybernetic implants, guns and flying cars.

After winning five much deserved Golden Joystick Awards, GamesRadar’s Leon Hurley caught up with Michal Nowakowski, Senior VP of business and publishing at CD Projekt RED, and got some insight as to what’s going on behind the doors at the studio.

“The team is divided right now…There’s a sizable team still working on [The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine], but an even more sizable team has actually been working on Cyberpunk for quite a while right now.”

Unsurprisingly, Cyberpunk 2077 is not close to a release date at all and CD Projekt RED isn’t planning on even talking about the game until 2017, so for now fans will have to take solace in the fact that development is in full swing.

Quick Take: As a fan of CD Projekt RED’s work, I’m super excited to see what the studio has in store for their next series. For those dreading the wait, it’s important to understand that this studio is considerably smaller than most AAA companies. Plus they still plan on supporting Wild Hunt with performance updates that will likely coincide with some sort of Enhanced Edition re-release, as they’ve done for the first two games.

If the company isn’t even going to talk about Cyberpunk 2077 until 2017, I suspect that the game won’t release until 2018 at the earliest.
