Who loves Norse mythology? Game developers and writers do! It’s my favorite too actually. When I found Thor: Lord of Storms for Android, I didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve quickly become very addicted to this action strategy-defense game from developers at Animoca.

There are three playable characters: Thor, (not Chris Hemsworth, sorry), Brynhildr, and Freyja (Brunhilde and Freya are common alternate spellings). You choose an Asgardian god to level and eventually defeat Loki the trickster god, Fenrir the fearsome wolf, and Surt the bringer of flame to prevent Ragnarok. You battle various minions and demons throughout the nine worlds of Yggdrasil, earning coins to upgrade your gods and skills. You may also purchase useable items with green gems to restore your health and mana, or to augment your character.
The art style is clean and a balance of ferocity and cuteness. Not a fan of cartoony styles? Don’t let this turn you away; this game is very polished and smooth. I wish I could emphasize the fluidity of play more. It’s a 2-D side-scroller but your character moves across the screen effortlessly. The loading screens load fast too, so fast it’s almost difficult to read the entire tip they provide to pass the time. But I prefer a fast loading time to an interminable one, so no complaints here.

It’s simple and undemanding to progress through. It’s not entirely without strategy; it’s easy to get caught up in groups thinking you’re all that and a bag of chips, then your health is zero. You don’t mash the monsters to attack, you just get in range and hit automatically. Defeating the waves of creatures and logging into the game every day earns you more coins, which are effortless to apply to your skill and ally upgrades.
Thor is free through the Google Play Store and through the iPhone App Store, but there are several opportunities for in-game purchases. Personally, I haven’t felt the need to purchase anything for progression’s sake but if you decide you can afford to pay for gems to acquire nifty abilities, then by all means go for it. The power is yours!
Overall, this is a fun mobile game that runs particularly well on my Android phone and doesn’t slow any other apps down. It loads quickly, you level easily as well as decide what your priorities are when upgrading. It’s also Norse mythology in a nutshell, which is a treat for any myth nerds. I highly recommend it for anyone needing a mobile game to get into!
