Piano Tiles: Another Rage Inducing Game

How many of you love taking a break from your day or get bored and play games on your phone for a little while? Well I have another one for you to add to your list… Piano Tiles.

Overview:

“Don’t tap the white tiles.” That would be the motto as well as your objective. Developed by Hu Wen Zeng, it is much like Guitar Hero or Rock Band in that you have black tiles coming toward you in which you must hit in order as fast as you can, but unlike those games there is no room for error as one mistake causes failure and therefore a restart. Oh, by the way, there is some pretty sweet classical music playing when you hit the black tiles.

There are five modes for this game: Classic, Arcade, Zen, Rush, and Relay. Classic is like a 100m dash. You are given a set number of tiles to hit as fast as possible. Arcade has a timer that counts down but resets after you hit a certain amount of tiles. Zen allows you to hit as many as possible in a given time. Relay is sort of like Zen mode except the clock starts over with every 50 tiles cleared. Finally there is Rush mode that measures the number of tiles cleared per second and gradually gets faster and faster.

The Good:

•  Really simple concept that anyone can play. Allows you to improve at your own pace.
•  The music is interesting with some fairly recognizable pieces  included.
•  The time it takes to complete a game depending on mode is somewhere between 7 seconds and 1 minute.

The Bad:

•  Piano Tiles locked up or exited on me a few times either in the middle of a game or when I got a new high score.
•  If you are a competitive gamer I would not recommend playing this if you are stressed out because it will make you throw your device through a wall.

Conclusion:

Much like Flappy Bird, Piano Tiles is fun to play but only for a bit at a time. It will foster a love/hate relationship with you as you try to beat your own high score. Unlike Flappy Bird, however, the better score you get the less time it takes so there will be no more 4 or 5 minutes sessions just to fail right before your high score. If you like free simple games for iPhone, iPad or Android phones then I would give it a try. WARNING: It is very addicting.
