Atlus recently posted a FAQ about the upcoming Persona 5: Royal, known as P5: The Royal in Japan, in which the company says the game is a PlayStation 4 exclusive — for now.
However, Atlus did add the usual enigmatic phrase “at this point” after saying there are no plans for the game on other systems. It’s always possible the game might make its way to Switch or another console a year or six months down the road from its initial release.
The post is on the Japanese Persona Channel website, but the power of Google Translate means we can still get the gist of what’s being said.
If this news sounds familiar, that’s because Atlus has repeatedly said there are no plans for Persona 5 on the Switch. The first was shortly after the system launched in 2017 and people wanted P5 on it, and then Atlus repeated the statement a few times in connection with Royal — when it was initially shown off and again after the official reveal.
This promo art holds a clue for what platforms P5:Royal will be on…
The post also mentioned there will be no save data carryover option, meaning those who are in the middle of P5 when Royal launches will just have to start all over again if they want to play the new expansion.
If Atlus is a bit tired of all the complaints and asking for ports, it must be said some of the blame falls on the company itself. Adding Joker to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and then teasing Persona 5S for several months — only for that game to end up being a Persona musou spin-off — just led fans on.
That every other mainline Persona game can be played in one form or another on a handheld, and that Atlus supported the 3DS extensively, only added fuel to the fire for a P5 Switch port. Alas, it’s apparently not in the cards after all.
