The hype continues to build for Civilization VI which is due to release on October 21 this year. While there have already been a number of civilization reveals, at this year’s PAX West convention fans have been given another and some couldn’t be happier! At the Firaxis developer panel, it was revealed that fan favorite, the Kongo, will now be a playable civilization in the upcoming game. Check out the reveal trailer below:
The Kongo has been one of the most requested civilizations by fans for a while so many are excited to see how Firaxis will be incorporating the African civilization into the game.
The leader of the Kingdom of Kongo was Mvemba a Nzinga, also known as King Alfonso I. He is most noted for attempting to spread Christianity through the Kongo and the relationship he built with the Portuguese. After fighting with the Portuguese to stop the Kongo slave trade an alliance was forged and Nzinga welcomed Portuguese missionaries into the Kingdom. This was seen as very beneficial as the men from Portugal helped to establish Christianity as a major religion in the area and helped advance the civilization by building schools, introducing a new social hierarchy and providing the Kongolese architects with new ideas and methods of building.
The unique aspects of the Kongo coming to Civilization VI are their specialist shield-bearing foot soldiers, the Ngao Mbeba, and a unique district called Mbanza.
